Abstract

This study critically examined wages and salary policy in public service with particular reference to Edo State Hospital Management Board. Desk analysis of secondary data reinforced by the analysis of transcript obtained from in-depth interviews was utilised. The study adopted equity theory as the framework of analysis. Findings revealed that the use of multiple salary structure for the remuneration of staff in the above mentioned health institution created a wide salary differential between the salary of medical doctors and other health workers leading to fierce inter-union rivalry between Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) and Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), inequity in employment terms and service conditions of workers and hence negative organizational performance. It recommends the use of uniform salary structure for payment, implementation of specialist allowance to deserving health workers, extension of federal government post graduate training enjoyed by medical doctors to other health workers among others.
