ASSESSMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCE VARIABLES AS CORRELATES OF STUDENTS’ LEARNING OUTCOMES IN SECODNARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU STATE
Abstract
This study examined the human resource variables as correlates of students’ learning outcomes in secondary schools in Enugu State. Two research questions guided the study while two hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance. Correlational survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for this study was 8522 respondents. It comprised 3425 male and 5097 female teachers in Enugu State owned secondary schools. The study included 852 participants who were teachers, with 342 being male and 510 being female. The researchers used a stratified and proportionate simple random sampling method to choose the participants. A researcher-developed structured questionnaire named "Human Resource Variables as Correlates of Students’ Learning Outcomes Questionnaire (HRVCSLOQ)" was used for data collection. Questionnaire was used for data collection which was validated by three research experts. To ascertain the internal consistency of the instrument, the researcher used Cronbach alpha statistic to compute the internal consistency. The computed Cronbach Alpha values were 0.81 for cluster A and 0.79 for cluster B respectively. Overall, the instrument demonstrated a reliability index of 0.80, indicating its suitability for use. In answering the research questions, the researcher used Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. However, hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance using linear regression analysis. The findings of the study showed that there was a high relationship between staff motivation and students’ learning outcomes in secondary schools in Enugu State. There was a high relationship between staff performance appraisal and students’ learning outcomes in secondary schools in Enugu State. Based on the findings, the study recommends that Enugu State government should encourage schools to invest in regular and ongoing professional development opportunities for their staff. This could include workshops, seminars, online courses, and conferences that focus on the latest teaching methodologies, subject content updates, and educational technology.
