INDIGENOUS COMPOSITIONS FOR POST - COLONIAL LITURGICAL MUSIC IN NIGERIA

Abstract


The Second Vatican Council provided a fecund ground for a post - colonial indigenization of Liturgical music in Nigeria, Africa and many other parts of the world in general. This was enabled by the document, Sacrosanctum Concilium which gave special impetus for certain countries in mission lands to embark on the process of inculturation through adaptation of worship to "their native genius". That said, liturgical music composers are only but gradually gathering the momentum for academic exploration of the multifaceted possibilities herein posited. This paper, as an outcome, investigates the theoretical constructs for authentic indigenization of liturgical music compositions in Nigeria and also hazards some compositional samples as fruits of such a study. It does so through ethnographic sampling, inquiry, opinion survey, compositional research and observation of new stylistic adaptations of folk/traditional music into the Roman Catholic Liturgy.
