PROBLEMS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN NIGERIA: IMPLICATION FOR POST-COVID SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
The English Language is a compulsory subject in Secondary School and it also serves as a means or instrument of communication between the teacher and students in the process of teaching and learning. For teaching and learning to be effective, communication too needs to be effective. Life generally cannot be smooth without communication. This paper is qualitative in nature and basically on the problems of teaching and learning of English language among secondary school students in Nigeria: implication for post-covid sustainable development. The paper further discusses concepts of teaching, and learning, the importance of teaching and learning, problems of teaching and learning, post-covid, sustainable development, and theoretical framework. The paper concludes that poor teaching and learning methods, lack of instructional materials, environmental problems, lack of interest for teachers and students, teacher factors, student factors, and mother tongue interference are the problems of teaching and learning of English Language in Secondary Schools in Nigeria. It also suggested that English teachers should use good methods of teaching a specific topic in the English language, good instructional materials should be provided by appropriate authorities and should be used properly by an English teacher, English teachers should attend and organize conferences, workshops, and seminars to improve the quality of teaching and when teaching and learning the English language, teachers should ensure the environment is conducive.
