HOLISTIC REVIEW OF ETHICAL ISSUES IN NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Abstract


Ethical issues in our secondary schools which undermines the goal of qualitative education is not limited to corruption, drug and substance abuse, sexual harassment, illicit affairs among teachers and students examination malpractices, victimization, injustice etc. Therefore, the study seeks to highlight and review ethical issues affecting Nigerian secondary schools. It explains and proffer solutions to myriads of ethical issues bedeviling our secondary schools which are not limited to poor value system, examination malpractice, drug abuse, indecent dressing, and stealing, negative attitude of parents towards discharging responsibilities, poor attitude of teachers towards their job prescription. Also, the paper explains the necessity for embedding values, morals, ethics and core character formation in Nigerian secondary schools and the involvement of students, teachers, parents, school administrators, government and other stakeholders in education in the campaign for ethics and moral values in our schools. The paper recommends effective measures for promoting ethics, values and sound moral standard in our secondary school such as the recruitment of teachers to be controlled by a regulating body which will ensure that professionalism is maintained and ethical code of conduct adhered to. Inculcating in teachers the need for strict adherence to professional code of ethical conducts and enforcing appropriate sanctions on erring students and teachers and for government to establish ethics and value unit in the ministry of education to supervise and monitor ethics and value implementation in secondary schools.
