IMPACT OF WELL-EQUIPPED ART STUDIO IN PROMOTING THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF FINE AND APPLIED ARTS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NSUKKA EDUCATION ZONE, ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
The focus of this study is on impact of well-equipped art studio in promoting the teaching and learning of Fine and Applied Arts in senior secondary schools in Nsukka education zone, Enugu State, Nigeria. To achieve this, survey research design was employed. The population comprised 32 Fine and Applied Arts teachers in the area. Due to the manageable size of the population, the entire population was included in the study. A 30 item structured questionnaire titled “Impact of Well-equipped Arts Studio Questionnaire” (IWASQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was face validated and trial tested. The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach's Alpha statistics and it yielded a reliability index of 0.77 which shows that the instrument is reliable for the study. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation scores to answer the three research questions that guided the study. Findings revealed that teachers are aware that well-equipped art studio promotes active participation of learners, and their overall performance; and that the extent to which the teachers use art studio in the teaching and learning of Fine and Applied Arts is low. The findings also highlight the lack of resources, including funding, materials, and lack of electricity supply as significant challenges to effective use of art studio. Based on the finding of the study, it was recommended among others that schools should allocate sufficient resources, including funding, equipment, and materials, to support arts studio activities.
