CURBING INDECENT DRESSING AMONG FEMALE MEMBERS OF THE APOSTOLIC CHURCH, UYO FIELD: LESSONS FROM 1 TIMOTHY 2:9-10

Abstract

Indecent dressing has become a growing concern in many Christian congregations, particularly among young female members, raising questions about the influence of modern fashion trends on religious values. Within The Apostolic Church, Uyo Field, this issue poses a challenge to the doctrinal emphasis of the church on holiness and modesty, especially as it relates to the public appearance and witness of the Christian woman. Rooted in both scriptural and communal values, dressing is not just an external matter but one that reflects inner piety and spiritual identity of a Christian. This study investigates the issue of indecent dressing among female members of The Apostolic Church in Uyo Field, drawing lessons from the biblical injunction in 1 Timothy 2:9–10. The study employed both descriptive and exegetical research methods. The study found that indecent dressing is a recognized concern among members of The Apostolic Church, Uyo Field, particularly among young females. This issue is linked to modern fashion influences, media exposure, lack of role models, and weakened doctrinal emphasis on modesty. The teachings of 1 Timothy 2:9–10 emerged as vital in addressing this challenge. Paul’s emphasis on modesty, self-restraint, and good works over external adornment gives a clear biblical model for appropriate Christian appearance. These principles stress that clothing should reflect inner godliness rather than material display or sensual appeal. Consequently, the study highlights the need for scripturally grounded dress guidelines, consistent teaching on modesty, mentorship programmes, and intergenerational dialogue to help restore a culture of holiness and modesty within the Church.
