EXPLORING THE NEXUS BETWEEN CHILD ABUSE AND THE MANIFESTATION OF BANDITRY IN NIGERIA
Abstract
One of the cardinal objectives of life is to experience the possibility of a peaceful and harmonious coexistence among humans devoid of stress and strain. This objective to a large extent has been defeated in Nigeria by the onslaught of unimaginable social vices that have ravaged the society to an unprecedented magnitude. Not quite long ago, Nigeria has been engulfed in the flames of banditry and terrorism which have threatened the sheer existence of the social, economic and political spheres of the nation. Research evidence has shown that, behaviours in adulthood are shaped by childhood experiences which form the basis of the attitudinal patterns of the child at an early age. Traumatic experiences during childhood in form of child abuse have been reported to be positively correlated with the exhibition of aggressive behavioural tendencies in adulthood. This paper examined the concept of child abuse in many ramifications and explored the nexus between it and the prevalence of banditry in Nigeria. Recommendations are also made in order to root out the precursors of banditry in Nigeria which is child abuse.
