THE IMPORT OF PLEDGES AND VOWS IN AFRICAN TRADITIONAL SOCIETY
Abstract
The relevance of pledges & vows to the deities among the African traditional practitioners is the main thrust of this work. The pledge and vow to the deities are part and parcel of African traditional religion. These practices are very important among the people. The work discovered among other things that the reasons why some traditional religion practitioners do pledge and vowed to their deities are search for happiness, to avoid calamity, rustications, offence, quest for continuous progress in life, security, appreciation and the fear of unknown. The researchers made use of primary and secondary sources of data collection as their methodologies. The work recommends, among others, that people should not pledge and vow out of fear or without knowing the future implication of their action.
